Astronomy Retreat at Punggai, Johor

Our journey started from NUS High School of Mathematics and Science.

All of us gathered there at 8 pm. Attendance was taken and finally, we departed at about 8.45 pm by a hired bus. The journey to Singapore Immigration was very smooth. There were no traffic jam and before we know it, we were getting our passport stamped at the Malaysia Immigration.

After taking another round of attendance to make sure no one was left behind, all of us went up the bus. A Malaysian tour guide joined us on the bus. He mentioned that it was going to be a two hour bus ride from the Malaysian Customs Checkpoint.

It was really dark as the bus headed to Desaru. According to the tour guide, Punggai was about 30 minutes from Desaru. The bus ride was quite smooth so, all of us decided to take a nap so that we would be wide awake when we watched the sky that night.

Finally, we arrived at our destination.

According to Mr Rizalludin, the business owner of Chalet D¡¯Punggai, he has been running the operations there for about two years. He has ten chalets and they are well maintained.
His wife and children are involved in preparing meals for holiday makers who rent the chalets from him. They provide breakfast, lunch and dinner.

However, Mr Rizalludin, mentioned that there was a little town about 15 minutes away that serve delicious seafood at affordable prices. We were excited about having seafood so, we asked him if he could drive us there on the next night. Well, he has a mini van, so he told us that he can make the arrangements to ferry the seven of us . We were grateful to him.

We were nourishing our minds and our stomach at the same time.

Mr Meng Lee gave us an interesting talk about basic astronomy. He explained the different types of telescopes and apparatus used in astronomy. He gave us insight on how stars are born and how they die resulting in black holes. There was so much to learn about astronomy.

Then Mr Meng Lee, elaborated on what we would expect to see tonight if the sky is clear. There will be planet Jupiter and its moons, many constellations and the highlight of the night, will be looking out for the Andromeda Galaxy. Everyone was very excited and couldn¡¯t wait for night to come.

Our oldest participant is Madam Tang. She is 73 years old and has never stopped learning. She loves to travel and make new discoveries every day. She is a very optimistic and cheerful person. She is very independent. We enjoyed her company.
She is looking through an Ultima Telescope that costs about $6,000.

We were able to see Jupiter with its four moons so clearly that night. Jupiter looked so clear and beautiful. Do you know that Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system? Also, Jupiter has 63 moons orbiting around it and so, it is the planet that has the most moons. The other planet is Saturn which has 34 moons and scientists are still discovering more moons.

This was a truly a memorable trip for all of us. It was extraordinary and a first time for all of us.
We truly enjoyed ourselves.
